PEEFACE
This edition contains the complete series of prose tales written by H. C. Andersen between 1835 and 1872, some of which are here for the first time translated into English. The arrangement follows that of the standard Danish edition, in which the tales are printed for the most part in the order in which they were originally written or published. Those pieces which have not been specially translated for this collection have throughout been carefully collated with the Danish text, with the result that many errors and inaccuracies have been corrected, interpolations excised, and omissions restored. The revision of these tales, and the translation of the remainder, has mainly been carried out by Mrs. Craigie.
