The Cockalorum Bird
O nce upon a time there were two children called Benny and Sarah. They lived in a nice house with their father and mother, and they went to school from Monday to Friday, just as you do.
They were rather quarrelsome children, and they were not at all kind to animals.                                                                ^~
Rover the dog hated them, for they trod on Jfc f^ N his toes and pulled his tail. Tibby the cat ran away when they came, in case her tail should be pulled too, or her fur stroked roughly the wrong way. Even the birds in the garden flew off as soon as Benny and Sarah came out, for they were afraid of having stones thrown at them.
Their mother didn't like to see them un­kind, but though she scolded them, and often read them stories of animals and their friends it didn't seem to make any difference. And one day—ah, something very strange happened to Benny and Sarah!
