PREFACE
The story of the Swiss Family Robinson, originally written by a Swiss pastor for the amusement of his children, has been translated into many languages and become a school-room classic in many lands. The story was originally issued in two parts, the popularity of the first drawing forth the second. The present book is taken from the earliest English editions of both. Some of the archaic words have been eliminated and the clumsy phrasing of the translator simplified. The long-winded sermons and lectures of the pastor, mostly irrelevant to the story, have been omitted, but the homeliness, and the slight flavour of a more formal manner of speech than our own, have been carefully retained.
